“First Quarter of 2025 – A Few Thoughts” by Panos Kafousias

First Quarter of 2025 | A Few Thoughts

Three months – and a little more – have passed since the beginning of the year and, as always, time seems to move faster than we expect. The Mt. Hymettus Aesthetic Forest is already wearing its first colors of spring: the Judas trees are in bloom, and along the paths and clearings, between the pines and cypresses, one can see, hear, and smell the gentle awakening of nature.

During this time, our day-to-day work has followed its familiar rhythm: regular clean-ups, ongoing maintenance, consistent monitoring, educational and volunteer programs, coordination with local authorities and institutions, and planning – both for what’s immediate and what’s ahead. From large to small – and often quiet – efforts, these are the things that support and protect the forest and keep us constantly engaged.

As always, I’ve had the pleasure of regular conversations with colleagues and members of the Board. Every meeting is a moment of reflection, alignment, and often inspiration – from tackling complex issues to simply sharing a photo of a blooming orchid found in the forest. In a time when challenges persist and shifting environmental conditions demand our focus, steady communication, strong coordination, and a shared sense of purpose truly carry weight – and make a difference.

On a personal level, my visits to the forest are my point of return. Walking among the trees, accompanied by the sounds of nature, I’m reminded clearly of what defines our work: a gentle balance. A living landscape that endures and evolves. Every time I cross paths with an enthusiastic hiker, a group of students learning about nature, or a family enjoying the forest with care and respect, I feel that we are moving in the right direction.

In the weeks ahead, we’ll continue our volunteer and educational activities, regular clean-up efforts, and infrastructure improvements. With the fire prevention season beginning on May 1st, our focus shifts even more strongly to prevention and preparedness – working closely with all responsible bodies to ensure the season unfolds smoothly and safely.

I would like to thank my team and all those who work with Philodassiki professionally or support us on a voluntary basis, as well as our sponsors, donors, and the “Friends of Philodassiki.” Nothing is taken for granted. Your contribution truly matters.

The Mt. Hymettus Aesthetic Forest is here. We care for it every day—and it awaits you.
